Fluorosis Research And Referral Laboratory

The Fluorosis Research and Referral Laboratory (FRRL) provide location specific and meaningful strategies to mitigate the fluorosis and it’s linked disorders. The center was identified as a Center of Excellence by the Academy vide reference No. SDUAHER/KLR/ADMN/330/2020-21 dated 14.10.2020.

Programs

Functional MoU

MoU titled "Fluoride related research and IPR related activities" pertaining to Fluorosis research was signed between Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research, Kolar and Acharya Institutes, Bangalore on 12- 07- 2017.

Guest Lecture

"Fluorosis" by Dr. Bapuji M and Dr. Krishna Rao on 12 – 04- 2017.

State Level CME

"Minerals in health and disease with special emphasis on Fluoride" on 12 – 05 – 2017.

National Webinar

"Fluorosis and its Global Perspective" was conducted on 06.03.2021 to create awareness on fluorosis and disseminate the information.

New Knowledge Generated: Academic researchers and advanced practitioners deliberated on fluoride containing dental products like fluoride gel, fluoride varnish, mouth rinses and fluoride containing tooth pastes also contain high amount of fluoride but adolescents and professional’s knowledge on this product and their fluoride concentration is very low. Many natural adsorbents from various trees and animal sources have been tried as defluoridation agents.

Seeds of the drumstick, tamarind seeds, tea ash, and egg shell powder are few among them. This new knowledge generated can help in establishing effective ways to mitigate fluorosis.

Goals

Short Term goals
  1. Establishment of the Laboratory
  2. Taking up research projects in association with other departments
Mid Term goals
  1. Procurement of funds from SDUAHER and extramural funds
  2. Conduct of CME/workshops/guest lectures to create awareness
Long Term goals
  1. Conduct of camps in and around Kolar district and thus get patients for symptoms of fluorosis to be managed.
  2. Preparation of formulations with readily available natural resources to ease symptoms/prevent fluorosis
  3. To seek a tie up with Government of Karnataka/NGO’s/ other Universities for furthering fluoride research
Future plans
  1. To establish research at the molecular level to find out effect of fluoride at the gene level by taking up studies on Genomics/Proteomics
  2. To develop in house cell lines and initiate research work on cell culture
  3. Since, Kolar district is mainly dependent on agriculture and rearing of Life stock the services of this lab can be extended to these levels of society also.
