Total knee arthroplasty, commonly known as a knee replacement, is a surgical procedure that replaces damaged knee joints with artificial components. This is often done to relieve pain and improve function in people with severe osteoarthritis or other knee joint conditions.
1. Removal of Damaged Parts: The surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and bone from the ends of the femur (thighbone), tibia (shinbone), and patella (kneecap).
2. Implantation of Artificial Components: Metal and plastic components are then implanted to replace the damaged parts. These components are designed to mimic the natural movement of the knee joint.
• Pain Relief: Significantly reduces knee pain caused by arthritis.
• Improved Function: Enables patients to perform activities of daily living more easily.
• Increased Quality of Life: Can enhance overall well-being and enjoyment of life. Recovery from TKA typically involves a period of rehabilitation to strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve range of motion. This may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and home exercises.
