Hemophilia is an X- Linked recessive disorder which almost always affects the males and females act as carriers while rarely even the females can be affected. The incidence of hemophilia is about 1 in 10,000 population and is considered a low volume high-cost disorder. The screening of patients having mild symptoms is essential to diagnose and treat these patients. In this part of Karnataka, an efficient set-up to screen and diagnose hemophilia is unavailable.
This guest lecture was organised to sensitise the clinicians and the laboratory technicians to diagnose and test hemophilia, which in the long run, comes in handy in establishing a comprehensive care centre for hemophilia. It was organised by the department of Pathology on 31-08-2023 in 1st Floor, AV Hall, SDUMC.
The invited speaker was Dr Suresh Hanagavadi, President, Karnataka Hemophilia Society, and Professor, Department of pathology, J J M Medical College, Davangere.
The Master of Ceremonies was Dr Haneena Mariam K, Second year Post- Graduate, department of Pathology who was fluent and kept the audience engaged. Invocation song
was delivered by Dr Deepa G, First Year Post- Graduate, Department of Pathology. The event was started welcoming the guest by organizing Chairperson, Dr Kalyani R, Professor and Head of the department, Pathology.
Dr D V L N Prasad Hon’ble registrar and I/C Vice-chancellor, SDUAHER, Dr Krishnappa J, Medical Superintendent RLJH&RC and Dr K Prabhakar Dean &Principal, SDUMC were among the dignitaries who were in attendance and spoke a few words in encouragement and wished the best for the event. PostGraduates and Consultants of Department of Pathology, General Medicine,Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Physiotherapy, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Physiology & Psychiatry and laboratory technicians of Central Diagnostics Laboratory Services and blood bank attended the guest lecture.
The first session was a lecture titled “Comprehensive Hemophilia Care- Best Health
Care Model for Chronic disease”, the lecture was directed at the clinicians and laboratory professionals sensitising and stressing about the need for a comprehensive centre for hemophilia diagnosis and care.
The second session titled “Adress to the Laboratory Professionals Including Technicians”, was
scheduled on 1st September 2023 at 11:30 am at seminar hall in CDLS, RLJH&RC. Tthrough this lecture, Dr Suresh Hanagavadi gave a brief introduction and sensitised the participants to the best laboratory practices in order to efficiently perform the tests and diagnose cases of hemophilia.
The interactive sessions were informative and aroused interest amongst the post graduates.
In the end, Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Subhashini H Bevinakatti, Organising Secretary of the event. The event was successful and a memorable one due to the joint efforts of the teaching, non-teaching staff and postgraduates of department of Pathology.
