About Us

Integrative medicine is ingrained in the definition of health. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Integrative medicine is a combination of mainstream (conventional) medicine with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), for which there is high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness. In the year 2013, the Dept. of Community Medicine, conducted ‘SAMANVAYA – a conference on Alternative Medicine’ which had brainstorming sessions on AYUSH systems of Medicine by eminent speakers from a different specialty, which led the foundation for Department of Integrative Medicine by upgrading the existing division of Yoga (which was under Allied Health Sciences). As far as our knowledge SDUAHER is the first University to introduce Yoga in the medical and nursing curriculum.

Warm greetings to all.

A hearty welcome to the Department of Integrative Medicine at Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research Kolar (SDUAHER).

Department of physiology laid the foundation stone for Yoga activities in the year 2011 by introducing Yoga therapy in the curriculum of the 1st MBBS. Later in the year 2013, a postgraduate diploma in Yoga practices was started under the faculty of Allied health sciences and Basic Sciences (then Allied Health Sciences). Free clinical services were offered in the R L Jalappa Hospital and Research Center Kolar (RLJH & RC) for non-communicable diseases. The department of Integrative Medicine is established in the year 2014 after a brainstorming session led by experts from the A-AYUSH field during the national conference ‘SAMANVAYA – Alternative Medicine’, organized by the Dept. of Community Medicine.

Present the healthcare system across the world facing a lot of challenges in addressing non-communicable diseases (NCD), chronic conditions, and lifestyle disorders. Each stream of medicine/therapy has its own merits and demerits. It is imperative to explore the best out of all AYUSH specialties and then integrate with conventional medicine. However, systematic research needs to be carried out, to explore their safety and efficacy before its implementation. India can lead the world in integrative Medicine as we have well established AYUSH and Allopathy (conventional) systems. In addition, AYUSH needs to be incorporated into the present conventional medicine curriculum in China.

The goal of the department is to promote health, preventing diseases, enhance the quality of life in challenging chronic conditions, and treat the NCD. To achieve the same department of integrative medicine is actively involved in research (EMR and IMR), academic, clinical services, and outreach activities. On behalf of the faculties, students, and staff, I thank you for your interest in the Department of Integrative Medicine (Yoga and Ayurveda). I hope that the healthcare system worldwide will be positively impacted by our scholarly, dedicated efforts towards excellence in Integrative Medicine through research, academic service, and clinical practices.
