The Academy established the department of Speech Pathology and Audiology under the Faculty of Allied Health and Basic Sciences on 25 June 2018. The department offers clinical services to those with speech and hearing problems, runs training programs in the area (B.ASLP, Ph.D.), and conducts research in the area apart from community-oriented activities. However, academic and research programs in the area would also be major activities of the department.

Speech and hearing is a branch of science that deals with the assessment, diagnosis, and management of communication disorders. The spectrum of the field is very broad indeed. We have to integrate information from medical sciences at one end of the spectrum (neurology, pediatrics, otolaryngology, psychiatry, anatomy, physiology, etc) and social sciences like psychology, linguistics at the other end of the spectrum. In between, we also need information from physical sciences like electronics, acoustics, physics, and computer sciences for a proper understanding. Thus, a study of this field is a challenge as well as a creative activity.

There were no facilities at Kolar and surrounding areas for clinical services in the area of speech and hearing. People had to go to Bangalore or Mysore to avail these services. Speech-language therapy being long-term, not many people could afford these services on a sustainable basis. Responding to this need, the Devaraj Urs Academy started this department with state-of-the-art infrastructure to cater to the needs of our people. Having an understanding of the economic status of our people, the Academy provides all its services at very reasonable rates. Our motto is to serve people. One of our goals is to be part of the world community of experts in the area by virtue of the standard of our work. We count on you to achieve this.

Our Bachelor's (B. ASLP) and Ph.D. programs, launched in the academic year 2020-2021, afford local students the opportunity to receive world-class training locally, obviating the need to travel to distant urban centres.
