Project: Setting up of a System for Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) for
Non-Institutional Deaths in a Selected Area of a Taluk of Kolar District, Karnataka:
Feasibility and Validity" 18th and 19th December 2024
Introduction
The Research and Development Cell of Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research (SDUAHER), in collaboration with ICMR-NCDIR Bengaluru, successfully
organized a two-day training session on the Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD).
The event took place on 18th and 19th December 2024, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, at the MEU Conference Hall, SDUMC, SDUAHER, Kolar.
Event Highlights
The session was inaugurated by esteemed dignitaries:

Each dignitary shared their valuable insights, emphasizing the importance of implementing MCCD systems systems for strerengthing public health surveillance.
Objective
The training aimed to:
1. Highlight the public health importance of MCCD.
2. Demonstrate innovative study tools and procedures for the project.
3. Discuss the feasibility and validity of MCCD systems for non-institutional deaths.
Agenda
Morning Session (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM):
• Public Health Importance of MCCD
o Speaker: Dr. Sukanya, Research Scientist, ICMR-NCDIR
o Dr. Sukanya discussed common errors in MCCD documentation and highlighted the critical role of accurate cause-of-death certification in improving public health surveillance and policymaking. The session included lively Q&A segment where participants shared challenges they encountered in their respective practices, sparking meaningful discussions.
Afternoon Session (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM):
• Demonstration of Study Tools and Questionnaires
o Speaker: Dr. Madhu Sudhan, Research Scientist, ICMR-NCDIR
o Dr. Madhu Sudhan presented the MCCD questionnaires, detailing their structure and content. He explained specific questionnaires tailored for maternal, neonatal, children, and adult deaths, emphasizing their role in comprehensive mortality data collection.

The session witnessed participation from 40 doctors representing various departments,
including:
• Medicine
• Surgery
• Pediatrics
• ENT
• Orthopedics
• OBG
• Emergency Medicine.
